What if lowering your risk of dementia was as simple as staying adequately hydrated? Dehydration is often linked to headaches, elevated blood pressure and increased heart rate, but there’s so much more. A recent study in Germany revealed that cognitive function had more of a significant decline in those individuals that were dehydrated. What’s more is that an additional study indicated that those individuals that were dehydrated had a higher risk of dementia – and those with dementia were more likely to be dehydrated…a concerning cycle. Additionally, studies are finding that dehydration can speed up cognitive decline in the elderly. While this may seem concerning, it’s important to note that adequate hydration may actually improve cognitive performance, depression and anxiety. The proper amount of required fluid intake depends on many factors – amount of exercise, hot temps, illness, pregnancy , breastfeeding etc…It’s best to spread out your hydration throughout each day! A good sign that you are properly hydrated is that your urine is light yellow or clear. Pro Tip – Check out the many apps available to support healthy hydration!! Cheers to your health!
